Hilscher NT100-DN-RS Industrial DeviceNet to Serial (RS-232/RS-422/RS-485) Protocol Gateway

Hilscher NT100-DN-RS Industrial DeviceNet to Serial (RS-232/RS-422/RS-485) Protocol Gateway

The NT100-DN-RS is a high-performance industrial protocol gateway developed by Hilscher, a global leader in industrial communication solutions. Its core function is to enable seamless bidirectional data transmission between DeviceNet networks (ODVA-compliant fieldbus for low-level industrial devices like sensors, actuators, and remote I/O) and serial communication systems (RS-232/RS-422/RS-485). As a robust "DeviceNet-serial bridge," it solves the connectivity gap between legacy serial-equipped equipment (e.g., barcode scanners, legacy meters, HMIs) and modern DeviceNet-based automation architectures. This gateway is widely applied in factory retrofits, discrete manufacturing (e.g., packaging lines, material handling), and process monitoring scenarios—where integrating serial devices into DeviceNet networks is critical for unified control and data collection.

    Key Functions

    • DeviceNet ↔ Serial Bidirectional Conversion:
Supports real-time data translation between DeviceNet (compliant with ODVA DeviceNet v2.0, master/slave modes, explicit/implicit messaging) and three serial standards:
      • RS-232: For short-distance (up to 15m) point-to-point communication (e.g., connecting legacy HMIs or barcode scanners), supporting baud rates up to 115.2 kbps.

      • RS-422: For differential point-to-point communication (up to 1200m) with noise immunity, ideal for remote sensors or meters.

      • RS-485: For multi-drop networks (up to 32 devices, 1200m), compatible with Modbus RTU/ASCII protocols—common in industrial meters and I/O modules.
Transmission latency is <20ms, ensuring responsiveness for time-sensitive control tasks (e.g., actuator triggering via serial sensors).

    • DeviceNet Interface Capabilities:
Features a rugged DeviceNet interface (terminal block connection, ISO 11898-compliant) with:
      • Auto-Adaptive Baud Rates: 125 kbps, 250 kbps, 500 kbps (matches standard DeviceNet network speeds), no manual adjustment required.

      • Multi-Device Support: Operates as a DeviceNet master (connects up to 63 slave devices) or slave (integrates with external DeviceNet masters), adapting to existing network architectures.

      • Optical Isolation: 2.5kVrms isolation to protect against electrical noise, ground loops, and voltage spikes—critical for stable communication in harsh industrial environments.

    • Serial Interface Flexibility:
Equipped with 2 independent serial ports (configurable via software) to support diverse device connections:
      • Port 1: RS-232 (DB9 connector) with hardware flow control (RTS/CTS) option.

      • Port 2: Combined RS-422/RS-485 (terminal block) with selectable termination resistor (120Ω) for long-distance networks.
Both ports support configurable data bits (7/8), stop bits (1/2), and parity (none/odd/even) to match serial device requirements.

    • Configuration & Diagnostics:
      • SYCON.net Software: Dedicated tool for defining data mapping (DeviceNet I/O ↔ serial frames), importing EDS files for DeviceNet devices, and saving/loading configuration templates for batch deployment.

      • Status Monitoring: 6 LED indicators (Power, DeviceNet Activity, DeviceNet Fault, Serial Port 1 Activity, Serial Port 2 Activity, Gateway Fault) for on-site visual troubleshooting.

      • Remote Diagnostics: Optional Ethernet port (for some models) enables web-based monitoring of bus load, error counts, and device status—reducing on-site maintenance needs.
